The Promise of the Spirit

And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit no many days from now." Acts 1:4-5, NKJV

"The promise of the Father..." what a beautiful expression. What did the promise of the Father consist of? "Ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit." One of the two greatest events recorded in holy writ, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost was the beginning of the Christian church. This accomplished the writing of a new law upon the hearts and within the minds of the redeemed. May every soul cry out with the poet who wrote:

"Hover o'er me, Holy Spirit
Bathe my trembling heart and brow;
Fill me with thy hallowed Presence
Come, oh, come and fill me now."
